Embracing Community and Faith: The Purpose of Big Summer Community Week

Every summer, communities look for ways to come together, share experiences, and build stronger connections. The Big Summer Community Week (BSCW) offers just that—a dedicated time for people of all ages to engage in fun activities, deepen relationships, and explore faith in a welcoming environment. This event is more than just a series of gatherings; it is a chance to open doors, hearts, and minds to the good news of Jesus through both words and actions.

Opening Doors to Connection and Faith

The main goal of Big Summer Community Week is to create a space where everyone feels welcome. The event invites the local community to join in a week full of activities designed to foster new friendships and encourage sharing faith confidently. It is a time when the church team grows together through service, preparing for future mission work in the autumn and beyond.

By offering a variety of activities, BSCW ensures that people of all ages and interests find something meaningful. Whether it’s through casual conversations in the community café or participating in creative workshops, the week encourages connection and spiritual growth.

The Heart of the Week: The Community Café

At the center of the event is the community café located in the atrium. This café serves as a welcoming hub where visitors can relax, chat, and feel at home. Coordinated by Louise Nadin, the café provides a warm atmosphere that invites people to drop in, enjoy refreshments, and meet others.

The café’s relaxed setting helps break down barriers and opens the door for conversations about faith and community life. It acts as a natural meeting point for newcomers and regular attendees alike.

Activities for All Ages

Big Summer Community Week offers a rich variety of activities designed to engage everyone:

  • Kids Club runs from Tuesday to Friday mornings, providing fun and safe groups for children. Sonia Harman leads this initiative, ensuring that kids have a space to learn, play, and grow.

  • Zones around the building offer different activities such as a games zone, arts and crafts, Lego play, and quieter afternoon games. These zones allow visitors to choose what interests them most.

  • Workshops and activities take place daily, with 3 to 4 different options each day. These are facilitated by church members who bring their skills and passions to the community.

  • Youth programme includes hanging out, playing games, and helping with activities. Jackie Dale and Michelle Ferguson coordinate this, creating a space where young people can connect and contribute.

  • Football and games on the Common provide a daily opportunity to gather outdoors for sports and fun. Paakow Barnes and Bruce Nadin lead these active sessions.

  • Big Table Lunch offers a meal open to everyone on a ‘pay what you can’ basis. Karen Virtue coordinates this inclusive meal, encouraging fellowship over food.

  • Friday Showcase ‘Streatham’s Got Talent’ closes the week with a celebration of local talents. This event, coordinated by Michelle Ferguson, highlights the creativity and gifts within the community.

Starting and Ending Each Day with Purpose

Each day of the week begins with a briefing, a message, and prayer to inspire participants. This sets a positive tone and reminds everyone of the week’s purpose. At the end of the day, there is a closing debrief, reflection, and prayer to help the team and attendees process their experiences and prepare for the next day.

These moments of reflection and prayer help keep the focus on faith and service, reinforcing the spiritual foundation of the event.

Building a Stronger Church and Community

Big Summer Community Week is not just about one week of activities. It is a stepping stone for the church team to grow in service and to expand the church’s mission throughout the year. By working together during this week, church members build skills, relationships, and confidence that will support future outreach efforts.

The event also strengthens the church’s connection with the local community, showing that faith is lived out through action and genuine care. This approach helps break down stereotypes and opens doors for meaningful conversations about Jesus.
