Discipleship
Equipping people to become disciples and to disciple others.
Video 1 provides an introduction and outline of the course. It answers the question: “what is a disciple?” It looks at different stages of the discipleship journey and how disciples grow. It explores the discipleship and disciple-maker pathways and some of the barriers and milestones on the way. It helps you to understand how people grow and what promotes growth. Finally, it looks at how you can measure outcomes and provides useful resources. This first session introduces the heart of discipleship at SBC: following Jesus in a way that leads to real transformation — and helping others do the same. Drawing on Scripture, practical experience, and honest conversation, the session explores what it means to grow as a disciple and to walk with others at every stage of their journey. Across the teaching we look at: •Jesus’ Great Commission and why discipleship begins with obedience of the will •How people grow spiritually — from unbelief to becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus •The different stages of faith (exploring, following, imitating, devoted) and how to recognise them •The role of beliefs, attitudes, values, practices, and habits in shaping a disciple •Why discipleship is relational, personal, and life on life, not a programme •How community, mission, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit work together to form Christlike character •The importance of being outward facing and helping others take their next step with Jesus This training video will enable participants to understand: •the importance of intentionally making disciples who make disciples •how disciples grow from an explorer into a fully devoted disciple •discipleship and disciple-maker growth indicators, pathways, milestones, agents, catalysts and outcomes
The second video helps you to discern where people are on their discipleship journey. It provides case studies that illustrate the complexities of everyone’s spiritual journey. It discusses how to help someone to grow and introduces a model of the disciple making pathway. It addresses how to encourage people to start on a journey of faith and gives a simple three-step ABC model to explain the gospel and lead someone to faith. It talks about the early and middle steps of the discipleship journey, and resources that can be helpful for people to grow, including the Safar app and Practicing the Way. It outlines how, as a disciple maker, you can help in specific areas. The session ends by stressing the importance of addressing sin and how to go about it in a sensitive way. In this second session, we explore how to recognise where someone is in their discipleship journey — and how to walk with them wisely, patiently, and intentionally. Using real examples, group discussion, and biblical principles, the session unpacks the key indicators that reveal a person’s spiritual stage and their next steps. Together we look at: •How beliefs, attitudes, values, practices, and habits shape spiritual growth •How to discern whether someone is exploring, discovering, following, or stuck •Why emotional intelligence and patient listening matter in discipleship •How to accompany someone without rushing, pressuring, or labelling them •The difference between being stuck, stalled, drifting, or growing •How to help people move forward through encouragement, challenge, and support •The role of modelling, authenticity and shared vision in helping others grow This session emphasises that discipleship is relational, prayerful, and Spirit led. It is not about putting people in boxes, but about lovingly discerning where they are and helping them take the next faithful step toward Jesus. This training video will enable participants to understand: •how to identify where someone is on their discipleship journey •the ‘Engage, Establish, Equip and Empower’ disciple-making pathway •how to help unbelievers become new believers •how to help new believers become growing disciples •resources for new believers and growing believers •how to help them discover their gifts •how to talk to someone about sin
The third video is about how to help a growing disciple become a disciple maker. It describes the elements of becoming a disciple who makes disciples. It demonstrates how you can model behaviours and character to help people to move on from just growing themselves, to sharing their faith and making disciples. The video then looks at the barriers to growth, which can occur at any stage of the journey. It introduces, and briefly outlines, the “Three Trees” model to address impaired or impeded growth or faith challenges and crises. This model can also be used more generally in disciple making. It finishes by challenging us all to put Jesus first in our lives and to prioritise our response to God’s word. Part 3 of our SBC Discipleship Training series focuses on two vital areas of church life: equipping believers to become disciple makers, and walking wisely with those who are stuck, drifting, or struggling in their faith. This session blends biblical insight, practical tools, group discussion, and real life examples to help us grow as a community that nurtures, restores, and sends. In this session we explore: •What characterises a disciple maker — lifestyle, witness, testimony, modelling, and encouragement •The essential elements that help believers actually do discipleship, not just think about it •How prayer, Scripture, availability, accountability, and shared mission shape disciple making •Why discipleship is God’s mission, not ours — and how that changes our posture •How to help people move from fear, hesitation, or stagnation into confidence and obedience •The role of motivation, habits, skills, and environment in shaping spiritual practices •How to share faith in ways that reflect personality, gifting, and cultural sensitivity •How to accompany people who are stuck, discouraged, disappointed, or spiritually drifting •The “Three Trees” framework — a biblical, heart focused tool for helping people grow through life’s challenges •How suffering, blessings, temptations, culture, and unmet expectations can impact spiritual growth •Why mentoring, honesty, and safe relationships are essential for long term discipleship This session calls us to be a church that is compassionate, courageous, and intentional — a community where people are equipped to share their faith, supported when they struggle, and encouraged to grow into the likeness of Christ. This training video will enable participants to understand: •how to share their faith •how to help growing disciples become fully devoted disciple-makers •resources for helping growing believers become disciple-makers •how to help disciples who are stuck, struggling, drifting, or in crisis using Christian Counseling Education Foundation’s (CCEF’s) Three Trees Model
The final video looks at how to support someone in crisis including safeguarding and confidentiality issues and contact details. It then looks at the process for signing up to be a one-to-one disciple maker at SBC. For those watching online, this is supplemented by the steps outlined below. The video concludes with further references to follow up. Part 4 brings the Discipleship Training series to a close by focusing on two essential areas: how to walk with people in moments of crisis, and how to step forward as a disciple maker within SBC. This session blends biblical wisdom, safeguarding clarity, pastoral sensitivity, and practical guidance to help us care well for others while staying grounded, supported, and Spirit led. In this session we explore: •What a crisis is and how people experience overwhelming circumstances differently •Common crises people face — emotional, relational, financial, spiritual, and more •The Three Ps of crisis response: Prevent, Provide/Signpost, Promote faith fuelled coping •How to support someone without exceeding your own capacity •When and how to involve safeguarding leads, professionals, or emergency services •Why confidentiality matters — and when it must be broken for safety •How to discern whether someone is teachable, willing, and ready for discipleship •The role of supervision, accountability, and wise boundaries •How SBC will match disciple makers with young adults, new believers, and new members •The importance of prayerful discernment before committing to disciple someone •How God uses your personality, experiences, and gifting — including empathy — to bless others •Encouragement to see everyday life, workplaces, and friendships as mission fields •A powerful testimony of workplace discipleship leading to faith in Jesus This final session calls us to be a church that is safe, wise, compassionate, and courageous — a community where disciples are formed, supported, and sent. It reminds us that every believer is invited into Jesus’ mission: to pray up, show up, and love well, wherever God places them. This training will enable participants to understand: •how to disciple someone in crisis •how to safeguard and keep confidentiality •how to sign up to disciple someone at SBC •how to access resources and a support group for disciple-making at SBC
